Jerry, you and I will have to agree to disagree on this. The oil does not splatter at all. Maybe with other motors, but not a low idling 235. It just dribbles out of the rockers when the motor is at low idle. So no mess on the floor at all, no oil dripping outside of the motor, it’s all self contained in the head. 1/2 preload is fine, you can go more, I have never had to go more than 1/2 to get them quiet but you can do it. One full turn is usually too much, at least in my experience, when adjusting them on a running motor. You can usually feel the motor studder when you get to a full turn. It’s not hard to do, a little nerve wracking at first, it just requires a little patience. I have adjusted countless 235 motors over the last 40 years this way, most of them were not my motors but other people who just could not get them quiet or running right. It’s a long accepted alternative procedure for adjusting the valves used by countless mechanics over the years simply because it works when the standard procedure dosen’t.
