Interesting BC59. I wonder if a bolt will hydraulic lock with fluid/oil down in hole? Never thought of that. I think it could.

Bluesman, you said bolts were cleaned and oiled. We are asking if threaded hole was cleaned out. Threads chased? Vacuumed out the debris?
Are all the original bolts the same length? I would check the total depth of each bolt hole against the bolt with washer length; and be sure there is space at bottom before bolting.

Hardware stores don't have the proper lengths for many of our automotive bolts. Weird but true. If you saw extra washers on the bolts, that would be a PO's remedy.

As Jerry said, you are in a red zone with this broken bolt mystery. Somebody did something wrong..... hard to break a 1/2" bolt.
