ok so the tech from classic parts put me in touch with Boyd who rebuilds the steering boxes. The diagram in the shop manual shows the retainer I asked about. However as I didnt think it was in 1950 and they used packing. The new one is a rubber gasket that is pressed down onto the bushing so no retainer is needed. Boyd also told me to use #2 permatex on all threads of bolts that come in contact with the gear oil inside the box. I feel better now.
