A good number of members here have installed the Saganaw trans and praise it highly. You could very well have the correct bell housing and the shift arm issues can be worked out. You may also wish to upgrade the brakes, steering, engine, and cooling system as part of the process.
An overdrive is another option, of course it's easy to spend money for someone else.
