It's a great piece of family history. You should be proud of it.
As to your goal of making it run, did someone remove the spark plugs and distributor recently, or has it been that way for an undermined length of time? If the answer is the latter, the odds of a startup without a complete teardown are probably slim.
But don't let that discourage you, lots of folks here who can help. If you're committed to it, it can be done.
