I had similar issues with my 1946 4 speed transmission. Worn counter shaft roller bearings that only made noise under load. This was a grinding noise, not clicking. They were quite when I pushed the clutch in and took off the load or coasted downhill. Nice in the sense that one gets a heads-up something is wrong before trany stops working all together.
