Are you using an original equipment type oil filter, or an adapter for a spin-on filter? If you're using a spin-on, you'll need to put a 1/16" diameter restrictor orfice in the return line. Otherwise, virtually all the oil will get routed through the filter and back into the oil pan, and very little will get to the engine. that's a guaranteed oil starvation situation as soon as you get on the road with any load on the engine.

It's simpler, and a lot smarter to use the original style canister filter.
