The type of wire you use and the temperature it's applied makes a big difference in how hard the final weld will be. Flux core wire has a habit of getting harder than woodpecker lips! CO2-shielded mild steel wire, especially .023" diameter applied just hot enough to bond well can be hammer-worked a lot easier.
