If you want and need the trans figure out what it's worth to you and make an offer, the worst thing that can happen is he says no and then you keep pecking away with offers until you are both happy or you give up and move on. I've seen transmissions as cheap as "free" (only worth about $2.00 as scrap) and up into hundreds of dollars.
