I haven't tried any flange welds yet. I wanted everything to look as original as possible and did not want the flange showing anywhere. I've got a set of the little butt-weld clamps from Eastwood. They work really great and have made many of the repairs much easier. The only problem I have run across is that sometimes the metal expands and wedges the spacer portion of the clamp in place. I've had to use a hammer and vice grips to tap and pull the spacer from between the panels.
At some point in the past I saw the same clamps in a Harbor Freight catalog for a better price. They may be listed on the web site. I'm not sure what HF's quality would be, but there really is not much to go wrong with the clamps.
