The "barrel" clips that we originally used on these seats
worked fine and lasted 60+ years. And the original material
was a very heavy gauge Naugahyde. It's tough but the clips
will press over this thickness and like your socks do to
your ankles, will eventually press deeply into the
material leaving an impression in it.
The reproduction clips "look" the same as the original ones
but they are not heat treated correctly. Many of them are to
hard and in stead of acting like a spring, they snap when
you try to press them on. And some are to soft and don't put
enough tension on the material. I find that even after nearly
a decade, they still haven't left an impression on the
upholstery material that JC used. I mixed them with as many
of the original clips as I could save and those original ones
do hold well.
There is nothing wrong with Hog Rings, they've been used in
upholstery since the beginning of time. Unfortunately they
can't be used with the flange that the GM seats wire made
with.
