I remember at least one GMC 4X4 that had a 3.07 gear at one end and a 3.08 at the other (from the factory). That .01 difference could be tolerated, particularly offroad. I seriously doubt that a greater mismatch would work, unless it was used in a fulltime 4X4 with a front/rear differential built into the transfer case.
