Ok, next possible dumb mistake by me. The last time I put the transmission together, I fashioned a gasket between the front bearing retainer and the case. I just check tolerances a bit closer. The retainer will fit fine without the gasket. With the gasket, the bearing, gear, and oil slinger all sit slightly forward. Perhaps that lets the slinger too far forward, thereby letting excessive oil gravitate out the front. Do you recon that's possible, or am I again flogging a dead horse?
