If I am remembering correctly, there isn't a seal in the older 4 speeds at the front. There is instead a spiral groove in the input shaft that helps to draw the oil back into the case from around the input shaft during operation. These transmissions are somewhat sensitive to oil level, with the correct level being slightly below the fill plug. Even with the correct level there is usually some seepage at the input shaft, especially if you park on a downhill.
