Question: I'm burning a lot of oil. Am I going to foul plugs or run into other issues soon?
My high hopes have been deflated. I pulled a 1971 250ci with unknown mileage from a 1966 C10 parts truck I bought. Compression checked out OK and it ran pretty good with a freshly rebuilt carb so I decided to use it. It was free to me since it was from my parts truck and I really didn't see much potential for selling it. I cleaned it up inside and out and made it pretty. HEI and Rochester B. I finally got my 1965 C10 road worthy 2 weeks ago and I'm on my 2nd tank of gas.
I replaced every gasket and seal except the head gasket and freeze plugs. I have no leaks.
When I drive in the early morning, I can see a light trail of smoke in the headlights of the car behind me. During the day I cannot see it smoke in my mirrors, but if I goose it, it will smoke.
My PCV is hooked up correctly. Starts easily and runs very well IMO. I think I use about 2.5 quarts of oil per tank full. Yikes. Tailpipe has black soot.
So what next? I plan to run the engine until I get some upgrades to brakes and steering done. Then bodywork. Then pull it apart and paint the truck.
I know a more modern engine might be cheaper than a total rebuild of this engine. But then I'll need to change to fuel tank under the bed, fuel injection and a bunch of other fairly costly "other" issues. I really like the unique and original looking L6.
