Thanks for the advice, I agree I think the welds are important and your plan sounds good.
Houston54, I guess I'm learning terminology, but the part I'm talking about is the rear cross-sill - the part that holds the bedsides toegther in the back. It's also the part taht the bottom of the tailgate touches.
