If it's 6 volts, you need 2 gauge ground strap between the engine and the frame. Then 2 gauge negative battery cable. Most people replace with 4 gauge because the 2 gauge is harder to come by. 6 volts requires two times the current capacity of 12v. Good clean grounds are critical. Of course same attention to the pos side.
