As Jerry has mentioned make sure all connections are clean, I.E. cleaned with emery cloth till it is shiny, I have used never seize on battery connections for many years. It is conductive, helps prevent corrosion, and allows the fasteners to come apart when the time comes. There is a special electrical stuff you could use as well, but it won't work any better, and I always have 2 or 3 cans of never seize around. I am using the standard off the shelf cables from O'reilleys that are intended for 12 volt systems. I don't remember the gauge right off hand, but I do know they are about 2 sizes smaller than many people think you absolutely need. But given I have been using them for about 3 years and my truck starts by basically stomping the pedal to the floor, and releasing it. I don't think the larger size is necessary. But then I may just be lucky. It does sound like the battery is not getting fully charged, but you need to have quantitive measurement, the lights getting brighter just means the generator is putting something out, but the fact it won't start with the starter says it isn't putting out enough voltage. Or at least it isn't getting to the battery.
