Sounds pretty normal to me Dave, and I've been doing brake
work for most all of my adult life, and it's been a long one.
You're dealing with a friction device that has to absorb a lot
of kinetic energy especially as you've mentioned, on mountain
roads. Those drums will get quite hot to the touch. Remember
when they're hot they're expanded so as long as they're not
hanging up on the shoes, not to worry.
There is a break in period where the shoes will not be making
full contact but once the shoes have lapped into the drum you
will need to re-adjust them. Bringing them up tight and
backing them off just till you hear them clear the drum is
good procedure. You may here the drum ever so slightly touch
a shoe but that's fine, no drum or hub or bearing adjustment
is absolutely perfect and a couple thousands run out is to
be expected.
