A voltmeter is connected red wire to positive side of the battery, minus side to the negative side of the battery. (or equiv)
An ammeter is connected totally different with one wire from the positive side of the battery, thru the meter, then the second terminal to the alternator. There is no negative in that scenario.
Even if your ammeter has a + and - terminal. Its ALL positive.
