Set the sector preload so the turning torque at the steering wheel nut increases 10 in/lbs. as the gear passes over center. With the drag link disconnected and an inch-lb. torque wrench on the wheel nut, turn the steering gear through center and record the numbers. For instance, if it takes 10 in/lbs to turn the shaft when approaching the center point, it should rise to 20 in/lbs as it goes over center and drop back to 10 after the high point is passed. If torque rises, drops at center, and rises again, the worm gear is worn out and must be replaced.
