Do you necessarily need a balancer with the hand crank lugs?

I have built up a new balancer using a 6" diameter item for a small block V8 and a 2-groove pulley for a big block engine. It requires just a little machining to make the pulley grooves align properly, but the assembly is made up with all new parts.
