If you want a cloth look, "friction" tape would do it. Black hockey tape? Is that a cold resistant version of black electrical tape? Sorry I have watched Hockey, but at a distance. Big guys with razors on their feet and bad tempers, reminds me to keep my distance. A black zip tie on the last turn of the tape will secure it from unwinding.
