A rubber hose was used in 1953, somewhere between the fuel tank and the fuel pump (different location for different models). I think it was there to avoid/minimize "fatigue" cracking in the metal line due to flex/movement between the fuel tank and the fuel pump?
I'll get corrected quickly if this is wrong.
