Now for memories from a really "old" source. I can remember how happy my brothers and I were when we GOT a tractor that took a hand crank. Still kept the old Poppin John that you pulled on the flywheel to start. The junk yard had a Panama Canal era crawler tractor they flattened cars with that you put a Ford drive shaft into slanting holes in the flywheel to pull it off. Flywheel stuck up through the foot board for access. I wonder what OSHA would have to say now. Started many cars for years with a crank and as long as you rotated engine to a compression stroke and then pulled UP on the crank the worst that could happen with a kick-back is that it would pull out of your fingers. If you push down it will transfer the force to your wrist/arm/shoulder.
