We are doing the same thing with a 55 T-Bird and our approach is if it moves inspect it, rebuild/replace it, clean it and lube it. If it's rubber replace it and carry a spare. If it requires or produces electricity carry a spare. If it has the name "bearing" replace it no matter where it's located. Radiator and heater core tested at double the radiator cap pressure rating. Inspect, clean, and tighten every electrical connection, especially grounds. We put a phosphorescent additive in every liquid in the car, ran until hot, and then put it up on the rack and aimed the UV light at every seam and seal. The man has spent a lot of money but even more than that we LIKE him and want him to have a flawless race.
