You can have it blasted with baking soda. It will get into even the tiniest pits, and remove rust. It is gentle enough to us on body parts. I've even seen them use it to remove the paint off of an aluminum soda can, without damaging the can. It is primarily used in aerospace to clean delicate airframe parts. After having it done, you can shoot an epoxy primer. Any pits left after that can be filled with a filling primer or bodyman in a can.
