I own this same DeVilbiss HVLP gun you have. I was also in the same spot as you are, I had only painted with rattle cans, but had good sucess with them. That is till this past weekend. I know someone who had a truck they were working on (a '89 S10) and wanted to get it painted. He wasn't too concerned with the paint job, just wanted it all one color (it was about 5 differnt colors). He knew of my lack of painting experience, and decided it would be good pratice for me

. He did all the body work (exept the welding, I did that) so I can't be blamed for the waves

For being my first time painting an entire vehicle, and my first time using this gun, it turned out pretty good, only got a couple small runs from trying to get too much paint on in the first coat. Here's a picture of the cab with 3 coats of paint on:

Not too bad for a rookie

I am very pleased with this spray gun. I have a 60 gallon compressor capable of about 11 CFM at 90 PSI and it had no problem keeping up.
P.S. The paint I used is a metallic paint also, and there are no stripes or blotches in the metallic. The paint is a Sherwin Williams acrylic enamel. I also used this same gun for the primer, just make sure the gun is completally clean before you start spraying the paint.
