The early 235 that pfarber is dealing with is most likely the earlier style exhaust manifold which used a doughnut/donut seal.
I have successfully used a donut-style seal on a donut exhaust-manifold and the newer-style flat-gasket exhaust pipe; but, I have not successfully used a flat gasket between a donut-manifold/donut-exhaust-pipe combination.
