My dad is an old Diesel mechanic and has worked on Detroit, Cummins and Cat among others. He has a soft spot for the old 2 stroke Detroits though. Beyond that he is a Cummins man for these little projects. I say little as growing up the smallest diesel I ever worked on was a Cummins 855 turbo. I don't really count the 5.7 that was in my grandpa's Oldsmobile as a Diesel, more of a small block Chevy that could get by on diesel fuel.
