Dennis, any singlestage urethane or enamel will work fine on engines.
Your engine is not going to get hot enough where it will burn off the paint, unless your painting exhaust manifolds.
Spray a coat of self etching primer, before you spray on your color.
The self etching primer has an acid additive that will bite into bare metal, giving you good adhesion.
All you need is a light transparent coat as an adhesion promoter, let it flash off for a few minutes, then go directly to color.
I like to use Dupont Variprime, you can get it in quarts and has an acid additive you mix 1 to 1.
I did the engine in my Chevelle 14 years ago, with Variprime, & used Seymor's engine enamel from a spray can.
It still looks the same to this day.
When I do the engine in my GMC , Im using Dupont, Idustrial Imron for color, it's extremely durable, you can pour it on & not get runs, & it's only $29 bucks a quart.
Im guessing it's the equivalent to the PPG that you are talking about.
