I have a quart of the gray engine paint. The label says it is PPG ALK-200 paint. I looked it up at the PPG site and don't see anything about it being used as an engine paint. The temperature rating is 200 without additive and 240 with. No additive on JCs website so seems like they don't think it is necessary. Seems sketchy to me. I haven't heard of complaints about it so just wondering whether those of you that have used it can give a thumbs up or down. This is an everyday usage truck so it has to be durable.

This MSDS says good to 240 degrees F. It is used on heavy machinery.

Thanks Drew. I just noticed that and updated my post probably same time you were posting. Most engine paints say 500 or so. Still, nothing on JC site says anything about the additive ALK-201 Polyurethane Enhancer.

For those that used this, did you use a primer? If so, what was it? Man, paint sure is a tricky subject.

Dennis, any singlestage urethane or enamel will work fine on engines.
Your engine is not going to get hot enough where it will burn off the paint, unless your painting exhaust manifolds.

Spray a coat of self etching primer, before you spray on your color.
The self etching primer has an acid additive that will bite into bare metal, giving you good adhesion.

All you need is a light transparent coat as an adhesion promoter, let it flash off for a few minutes, then go directly to color.

I like to use Dupont Variprime, you can get it in quarts and has an acid additive you mix 1 to 1.

I did the engine in my Chevelle 14 years ago, with Variprime, & used Seymor's engine enamel from a spray can.
It still looks the same to this day.

When I do the engine in my GMC , Im using Dupont, Idustrial Imron for color, it's extremely durable, you can pour it on & not get runs, & it's only $29 bucks a quart.

Im guessing it's the equivalent to the PPG that you are talking about.

I cleaned my block with a hot pressure washer, blew it dry, treated with Ospho, hot pressure washer again, blew it dry again, primed with extreme heat Rustoleum engine primer and painted with dark gray engine paint from The Filling Station. Looks like new three years later.
