I made my own also..I just formed a flanged closed "C" using some fairly thin Steel and had a swivel Bolt through the Flange to hold the Arm, which Arm would hold the Hood up.
Flanged "C" of course mounted on the grille support Rods.
Arms were 1/4 x 5/8ths White Oak with padded ends...Arms also had a small thin strap Steel Hook toward their top, to hook over the Grille support Rod, when at rest.
I did those in 1977 and they worked perfectly and held up fine for the next 23 years of daily use.
