It sounds like you are on your way! The final paint needs something to grab on to and 400 grit seems to be about the norm. The final paint should say on the can what the surface should be.
Hows the sanding going, is your back tired, and hands worn smooth? Fun isn't it :p . Is the guide coat helping?
