Thanks for the clear explanation. I carry a spare tested distributor with adjusted points, condenser, rotor, and cap. If my Pertronix unit goes bad, I'll toss it out and go back to points.

Would the problem you describe get worse at higher RPM? I had that symptom with a 12v Pertonix unit in one of my 261s.
