Welcome to the Stovebolt Windy1. This is a great web site for old Chevy and GMC's. I also know there are several gifted bolters in Illinois so watch for them. They may be close to you.

Since this is the welcome center you will be better to ask questions in the most appropriate forum. There is also tech tips and the gallery and links to help you.

....anyway, I think the location for the vin tag may be on the passenger side cowling when you raise the hood.... but these questions can be answered in the Paint and Body or even in the General Truck forums. Help is here and available. Sometime you may have to be patient for a day or two till the right person signs in but the guys here are great.

...anyway, the engine number should be located on a "pad" just behind/beside the distributor! That would be a qood question to ask in the engine forum. The guys there can help and also decipher the number or tell you how to do it. Good luck.
Don't forget to post a picture when you can. To send PM's and post pictures you must make at least 4 post while being moderated. Then you can enjoy all the stuff here on the bolt.
So, start asking questions smile

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you smile
