My Ford manuals say to add 4qts when changing oil, but includes a note to add a 5th qt if the oil filter was changed.

But all my manuals say to run the motor and check the dipstick level, and add to fill line if needed.

A bypass filter will not hold an entire quart unless the media is saturated... so it you pour in a qt, then try to add the filter it will not go well. Ditto if you put the filter in first then try to pour in a qt... unless the media is saturated it will not hold a full qt.
