Yeap the ball is the same also. One advantage he might have is 2nd is slightly lower in ratio than the low in the 3 spd. 3.58 to 1 for the 4 speed. Plus all three top gears (2nd, 3rd,and 4th) are synchronized.
Problem is finding a 4 speed 1/2 ton universal.
I had one made up from an open 3/4 ton universal and the rear part of an enclosed 3 speed universal.
