The temperature sending unit can go in the pump housing, or in the intake manifold, or wherever it can dip its feet in coolant. You won't find any oil tap in the manifold, but right at the back of the valley, near the distributor in the block proper, there should be a plug that accesses the oil gallery. There is probably somewhere else too, but I know that this was a popular spot for either a sending unit or a fitting for a mechanical gauge.
