Tiny, the only Chevy V8 made without a filter mount was the 1955 model 265. (It used the same canister filter the stovebolt 6 engine had). The oil pressure line to the filter was attached ahead of the intake manifold at the front center of the block, just above the timing cover. The return line went to a fitting in the oil pan, I believe. All the others had a filter mount cast into the block at the driver's side of the bellhousing area. Either a can-type canister filter or a spin-on was used from 1956-up, depending on the year of the engine. I wonder if somebody has swapped a 55 engine into the car sometime in the past? Check the stamped engine ID number on the machined pad ahead of the passenger's side cylinder head. If it is a 55-year 265, it's a scarce engine, worth something to somebody who's doing a period-correct restoration on a 55 car or truck.
