As usual Jerry is spot on. The only thing I would add is where this fuse should be located. I suggest placing it at the output lug of the generator/alternator. I use a fuseable link which I made up to fit my application. I also carry a spare because if it opens I can clear the short, replace the link, and get back on the road.
