One more thing Jon,
Consider this fact. Right now, with 28" tire, 3.08 rear and a 1:1 final gear (3 speed or 4 speed), you should have 2402 RPMs at 65 MPH.
If you swap in an S10 T5 and your engine bogs with the 0.86 OD gear, then swapping the rear to a 3.42 would prevent bogging BUT the end result will be almost zero gain (a drop of only 108 RPMs compared to your current setup).
Here's why.
1.0 final gear with 3.08 rear at 65 MPH = 2402 RPMs
0.86 final gear with 3.42 rear at 65 MPH = 2294 RPMs
I'd hate for you go to all the work and expense of swapping and not have a better driving truck.
The way I see it, if the 0.86 and 3.08 rear combination doesn't work well, then don't bother putting in the 3.42 rear. You wouldn't gain much.
