Hey Silverado
I am running .025 welding wire. I am able to weld plates as thick as 1/4" with it. With sheet metal repair/patching I get everything lined and then I tack like every 1" or so and then go back and make little tack welds to fill in the 1" space between the original tacks. This will keep the warping down to a minimum.

Your welds dont look that bad really.
