I have the parts and the kit to replace the door pins and bushings in the hinges, as it sags a bit.
Do any of you have any tips, tricks or suggestions on what tools to use... the order of operations, etc., for this project?
Thank you for any replies.

I felt that forcing things apart would have distorted something, they were stuck good. I then reassembled with the new pins and bushings, Scott | | | | Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 220 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 220 | 48bigtrucks is spot on. You can try to drive them out, however if they are that far gone you will be time ahead by completely removing them the truck and piecing them apart. Seems I recall going through about 4 sets before I was able to make a good set. | | | | Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 1,552 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 1,552 | Pull the hinges and soak them in a pan of tranny fluid. If you have access to one, put them in a Ultrasonic cleaner. When you are able to pivot the hinge, it can be taken apart, by driving the hinge pin out, inserting the bushings & driving the new pins.
Good luck with the project. | | | | Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,384 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,384 | I've had the best luck removing the doors first, then, leaving the hinges on the truck, whack the pins hard w/a BFH after soaking them w/your favorite penetrating oil. Sometimes I'll squirt them daily a couple days before I start. Use a good pin punch, cheap China ones usually won't do. Knock the bushings out w/same punch, tap the new bushings in place. Replace pins, doors etc.
Down here the rust maggots aren't too bad, I've only had to cut apart one hinge like Scott describes above in the dozens of truck hinges I've done. | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 2,877 Socket Breaker | Socket Breaker Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 2,877 | | | | | Joined: Jul 2010 Posts: 43 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jul 2010 Posts: 43 | I live in the rust capitol of the world...Michigan, and replaced 2 sets of hinge pins. I removed them from the truck...then they spent days soaking in penetrating oil, and even though everything seemed loose it was a real chore to try and drive them out, but I was patient and finally got-r-done. Never thought about cutting them apart...which I'll try next time. Also, my new pins were cheap and too long, so I ended up cutting them and beveling the tips to look like the originals. Yep, I remember those days in the U.P. | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 2,877 Socket Breaker | Socket Breaker Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 2,877 | Well, I finally got around to this today... I could not make the pins budge on the truck, took the hinge off to whack it out, finally got it all back on... and yep, it's out of whack. Even after I got the hinges off the truck I had the really WHALE on 'em to get them pins to even move. YIKES. I even lined everything back up with the rust/paint marks. Well, it's back on there and I ran out of light and motivation. I'll mess with it some more this week I suppose... old trucks... are fun? right? -W p.s. door hinge pin, wrenchin' action shots | | |
