For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,644 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,644 | Could someone please tell me exactly where the cross member attaches that holds one end of the under-bed spare tire carrier on our trucks? Pictures are worth a $1000 bucks!!
Bought one at a swap meet and don't know where to attach the U-shaped steel bar that holds one end of the carrier. I know the other end hangs from a hook towards the rear of the truck.
Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the help. What year? There were two styles for 1/2 ton A-D trucks. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,644 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,644 | 1950 1/2 ton. The carrier came off a '51.
Thanks Dads50 for the link to Dennys work. Great pics. My carrier looks like Woody's though.......not Denny's.
Thanks.

That would be what was originally on your '50, 3104. In '51 and later models they went to the cross over style that has the U-shaped hanger that you discribed. This type of carrier was used for many years after its introduction. Here is the layout for your '51, 3104: http://www.pbase.com/dennygraham/image/138901806/large DG

I didn't know the carrier changed in '51. So, I guess I'll either have to jury rig this '51 carrier into my '50 or sell it and try to buy the correct one at the next swap meet. I'm leaning on trying to shoehorn it into my '50 as is. I'll work on it next weekend.
Thanks also to Gmoniz for the link. Good discussion there.
I still would appreciate someone taking and posting a pic of a '51 spare tire carrier properly mounted (original). It would help me see where to bolt/weld the cross member.
Thanks again.

Thanks again. Dennys link above shows details on mounting the carrier I have one reference photo you can look at ...pic... Chevs of the 40's sells an aftermarket carrier ...link... Quality looks suspect originals are hard to find. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,644 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,644 | Dads50, Thanks so much for the links. I looked at all Dennys pics but his is of one that fits '47-'50. The one I bought at the swap meet came off a '51. I'm trying to adapt it to my '50. I had no idea they changed from '50 to '51. The one from Chevies of the 40's is a bit pricy for me.
So.........I still am seeking a picture of a spare tire carrier on a 1951 1/2 ton if someone would be willing to post it/them.
Many thanks!

Here is another pic from the classic parts forum ....click... ...click... I purchased an original off e bay a few years ago for my 50. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,644 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,644 | GMONIZ, thanks for the links. The picture of the blue truck is a good one but unfortunately does not show up close of how the support crossmember is attached.
Dads50, thanks for the link to that album. Jim did a super job of restoring his green truck and several of the pics during disassembly showed the support bar for the spare tire carrier. I saved them all to my computer and will use them for reference. I think it should be possible for me to use the '51 carrier on my '50 without too much adaptation.
Thanks everyone for your help in solving my problem. Now I've got something to work with next weekend.
