HI all,
I was wondering if anyone thought the Zenith 228 was a good carb and if it would run/work well with my 235?

235 - passenger car - 1955-57.

My truck runs rough (like it is missing even when warm) and think my Roch B may be the cause.

I have set my points to 16 (17-19 the engine is not happy with) new plugs, wires and cap.

Thanks for the help in advance, any thoughts/advise are welcome and sorry if I missed this question in another post.

Take care,
Steven

In my opinion a Zenith is a much better carb than a Rochester. It is not common to put a Zenith on a Chev because most people are looking for a cheap fix. I think it should work well.

Zenith 28 carbs were widely used on GMC 228/248/270 engines so it may not be too hard to find a used one but there were quite a few variations within the 28/228 series for mounting, relation of choke and throtle butterflies, venturi size etc. so check that the one you are looking at fits in all ways.
Also, new 228 carbs are available. Sources include http://www.autotestsys.com/Zenith.htm and http://www.carbsonly.com/carbs/indfarm.htm and possibly others too. Pricing seems to be about $600.

Assuming you select the correct 228 for your Chevy, you will find it superior to the Rochester in every respect (except initial cost).

Jon.

Good carburetion is fuelish hot air
The most expensive carburetor is the wrong one you attempt to modify.

Thanks so much for everyone’s input. I have not heard any good things about a Rochester. My Grandfather had a 54 GMC with the 270 (I believe) and it did have a Zenith on it. That truck ran like a Swiss watch from 66 tell the day he passed on in 2000. So I am going to go for the Zenith. Hopefully it will resolve my issue.

Have you priced the new Zeniths? I think they are around $500. A Zenith for a 228 should give you a little more throttle response and a Zenith for a 248 should give you a little more top end, but it might produce a flat spot on the way up.

What I am trying to find are the older Zeniths that the one I purchased from them replaced. Purchased at 641.00 and seems to run very nice so far. Thanks for the feed back guys.

Take care,
Steven
