1948 Chevrolet?
What style heater?

I think this was used on 1948 recirculating heaters and it might have also been used on the 1948 Fresh Air heater? I think that this style is a metal plate (aluminum) with tabs/tangs that go through holes/slots in the the heater housing? Decals were used on GM heaters in later years.

Tim is correct the 48-50 (early 51's) have this plate, there are four slots punched in the heater housing you slip it on and fold them over. Later versions Late 51-55 use a stick on decal (some variations by year) no holes in the housing you just use a Chevrolet or GMC decal.

I have the 48-50 fresh air unit (I thought so, anyways) and bought the plate Tim posted. I thought it was a sticker. Neither the plate or unit have the slots/tabs. The plate is concave. I thought the plate I was purchasing was a sticker. Maybe I have a 51-55 fresh air unit. Please note the emblem sold by Chevy Parts is for the 47-52.

I don't know?

1947-1952 used the metal decal with the tabs. The decal that you purchased would attach to the original style decal.1953 and up used the sticker as in these links.I believe this is what you are after.Keep in mind that your truck may have had the heater installed years later.

Tim. Thank you. I believe you are right. I had a 53 cab that this unit is out of. I am putting it in my 48 cab and it fits fine. I also noticed that Jim Carter sells the metal tag I have and it says that it is concave and is held on by double sided tape. Not tabs.

Thank you all.

Hey Brad "the heater guru":

There is a collar on one of the defroster outlets on the heater in your pic. Do you know if one of the defroster hoses for the heater in your pic is larger diam than the other? Does the larger defroster hose go over the collar in the pic?

The driver's side defroster vent on my '54 with Fresh Air heater has a larger port than the passenger vent. The ports on the heater are both the size of the smaller passenger vent. I believe that my heater and defroster parts are all correct for my truck. Possibly the driver's side is larger to off set the longer hose to that side.

I used the smaller size hose on both sides of my heater. The hose goes over the passeger defroster port, and is jammed into the driver's defroster port. It's held so far.

Sorry for hijacking the heater badge thread.

Thanks,

- Lonnie

My heater has the cable for the flapper door. I don't know when that changed from the handle on the box to the cable over by the driver.

It sounds like a 1953 air flow heater like this one.
1953 Air Flow
Or is it like this Deluxe Air Flow
Deluxe Air Flow
Deluxe Air Flow pic#2

If it is like the first picture, brand new reproduction heater cores are available from Jim Carter. They fit really nice,I had to bend the screw tabs a little to align them up.This core will not fit a Deluxe Air Flow Heater,The cores are different.
1947-1953 Reproduction Heater Core from Jim Carter

Here is a picture of a 1947-1952 Air Flow with the metal badge with tabs. The metal decal is glued onto the original one.

This may help you with your heater installation.

Don't forget to buy the decals for the defroster bracket and heater.

Good Luck,
Tim

Lonnie,

I measured up the hoses and in this kit they are two seperate sizes. The larger hose, vent, and splitter are 2-1/16" inside diameter. The smaller hose, vent, and splitter are 1-11/16" inside. The rings slip over the smaller port so you can eliminate the smaller hose. One goes on the splitter and the other on the vent under the dash. I don't know when these changes were made since I have several of the black rings kicking around from trucks I parted. The heater in my pictures has a date on the box from 1953 so that is a long way into the AD production run and it has the two different hoses. So after rereading the installation instructions the bushings are called out in the kit for the passenger side. So somewhere along the lines one heater hose size must have been decided on. If you want to see these original instructions e-mail me for the pdf. So either with bushings or without it is factory correct.

Thanks for measuring, Brad. That kinda confirms what I suspected.

Yes, I would like to have a pdf of the instructions. I'll send you a PM with my email addrss.

The diameter is the same on both defroster outlets on the splitter of my "Harrison HD 04 54" Air Flow heater. The port on the driver's side defroster vent is larger diam than the port on the passenger vent. I bought cloth defroster hose from Jim Carter and returned it because I thought that it was too large diam. Bought smaller diam from Chevs of the 40's. Then I figured out that both suppliers were right ... one supplier had driver's side hose; one had passenger side hose! As I said, I ended up stuffing the (small) hose inside the driver's side vent.

This page from the '54 Accessories Installation Manual shows TWO bushings on the driver's side: one one the port to the vent and one on the splitter at the heater. Don't know if it is a misprint. My heater would only need one bushing ... on the splitter port of the heater going to the driver's vent, assuming that the large diam hose was connected to the driver's side and the smaller diam to the passenger side.

My heater. (Yes, I know the temp control knob should be black on my '54.)

Thanks again for your help,

- Lonnie

Lonnie,

The difference may be in the different heater styles and could be correct for your Air-Flow and since that is factory literature I would say it is. Send me your e-mail and I will send you the pdf it is interesting that they would change sides for the heater applications but that is what is fun with these trucks always a puzzle to solve.

Another puzzle is the location of the fan switch. I noted this in an earlier post ...

"The '54 Accessories Installation Manual says to mount the fan switch on the right of the air control cable, same as the '51 manual. My dash is predrilled to mount it on the left of the cable. I have pix of an unrestored '54 that also has the fan switch on the left. Wonder if the mounting was changed in '54 and not documented in the manual?"

My fan switch.

I appologize again to the original poster. I have completely hijacked your post about the heater emblem.

Hey Lonnie I like where this post is. I hope it helps others.

Tim. Thanks for the pictures. The 53 and the 47-52 fresh air systems look the same. I guess it is the emblem that changed. I think I have the 53 fresh air system and need to buy the sticker. I hope they take the metal concave plate back. lol

Thanks to all

The 1952 "fresh air" system did not look like the 1953 "fresh air" system.

The 1947-1952 "deluxe" GM heater had no interior door for recirculating interior air (part number 186904 for all those years).

In 1947-48, the "deluxe" heater was called (in Chevrolet Accessory Manuals and in Accessories Lists) the "Fresh Air Heater"; and, in 1949-1952, the heater was called an "Air Flow Heater". The heaters appear to have been the same over all those years (47-52). On these heaters, there was a cable-controlled defroster "flap"/diverter.

The name-tags (metal/aluminum plates with attachment tabs on them) might have been the same on all 47-52 Chevrolet truck heaters (recirculating and "deluxe"). However, in the very poor quality pictures in the 1950 Accessories Installation Manual, the image on the Recirculating Heater's name-tag plate appears to be slightly different from the Air Flow heater's plate.

In 1953, the "deluxe" heater had an interior door (with a cable control) and was part number 986709. The defroster "flap"/diverter was a hand-controlled lever (similar to the one used on the more common recirculating heater). 1953 documentation also called this heater an Air Flow heater.

The 1954/55-st "deluxe" heater also had the interior door (as was used in 1953), and it was called an Air Flow heater, but the part number changed to 986895.

The 1953 and 1954 Accessories Installation Manuals use the same installation illustrations/directions for the cable-controlled interior door on the "deluxe" heater (including showing in the 1954 Accessories Installation Manual the 1953 knob on the cable-controller for the interior door).

My guess is that the 1953 heater had a different part number than the 1954/55 heater due to the change in the style of the cable controller knob.

Supposedly, the 53-55st Air Flow heater used the same decal, which was supposedly different from the earlier, metal plate. And, this 53-55st Air Flow heater decal was different from the 53-55st Reciculating Heater decal.

Is that confusing enough?

Since the heaters were either dealer-installed (or owner-installed) and obtained through a dealer, an earlier Air Flow heater (without the internal door) might have been installed on a 1953 or later truck (if the dealer had the older "deluxe" heater in stock).

Does anyone have a GM illustration (other than the Accessory Installation Manuals) for the locations of the 53-55st heat control switch and interior-flap cable-control. The holes in my 1954 trucks' dashes accommodated the locations/orientation as shown in the Installation Manuals.

My heater has the rectangular heater core and the flap plate at the output (operated by a cable) to divert the air flow to either defroster or floor. The decal was simple with only Chevrolet on it.

I also need to rebuild the controler with the Ranco piece.

Darn this is confusing. Sorry

>> RE: Heater Decals -

There may have been another heater decal, too.

This decal was on my '54 3100 AirFlow heater when I bought the truck. The heater had been painted black by a previous owner, so the decal was not the original one. Chevs of the 40's had it in their catalog, but it was not available. Doesn't look like the drawing in the 1954 Accessories sales booklet.

The decal was discussed in this thread.

I also need to find out how the defroster vents attach to the dash. There are clips on one side but is there a screw that draws up the other side to the dash? These vents look the same. I assume there is no difference from left to right. How long are these screws?

Thanks

Yes they clip on one side and then they get a 1/2" screw to hold them to the dash on the other. There is a difference from left to right depending on heater and hose selection. If you use the bushing to make the hoses all large then no it does not matter. If you have and Air-Flow heater than the small vent is on the driver side. If you have a recirculating heater the small hose is on the passenger side (this information is gleaned from installation instructions). Here are some updated photo's of the original small/large hoses, bushings and vents.

OK. I have the correct vents and see that the drivers side is larger diameter than the passenger side.

Do any of the venders sell the set that contains both sizes?

Thank you very much
