I have a '54 chevy 4 speed trans I got for almost nothing, but the gear shift lever is missing. There is a junk truck on a friends farm that is rotted away gone, total trash almost but the trans is in it, but it's up on a hill, can't get to it etc. I just want to get the gear shift lever. how does it come out?

Whether you think you can or can't, you're right.

Also--in 2004, I invented the spotting alert network in stovebolt after seeing so many trucks when driving around. So that means I am cool.

You push down on the tower cap and rotate it slightly counter clockwise. It will then release. The shop manual shows a tool. I use a mokey wrench on its side.

Push down on retainer and turn

I think it's ccw

when I took mine apart for inspection, I used a roll of electrical tape, slid it down the shaft, pushed and turned ccw. worked like a charm cause the cardboard middle of the tape roll kinda 'gripped' onto the retainer.
