Has anyone or can it be done by installing a key lock for the drivers side door on the 47-50 doors like on the passenger side?

I'll let you know tomorrow. I just bought locks from American Classic and will be installing them tomorrow.

OOPS, you said 47-50 mine is a 53 with different door handles.

Why would you want to change something that is unique to these years?

I have door locks on both doors of my 1954 GMC, no problems.

Shave the handles and all issues are solved.Oops just kidding. Just have your sweetee lock the driver side form the inside and go around and open her door and then lock it behind you. That was back when GM thought everyone had manners???

No problem with '52 and newer doors. The lock is separate from the handle in the older trucks. There is no lock hole in the drivers door.

We have put left side door locks on 47-50 for several of our customers. The tear drop point on the lock bezel will be facing the opposite direction, the key goes in upside down, and it should really be done before the finish paint is applied. It is NOT a quicky saturday job but does work well. You will need metal shaping tools, steel stock, and welding equipment. I put the photos of the procedure on the Classic Parts site so you should be able to do a search there on left side door lock. If you can't locate it contact me and I will email you the step by step pics. Obviously it can be done,but I've never considered it to be a big problem.
I kind of like the quirkiness(?) of it!

I agree with Sully too,I like to think of myself as a 'gentleman' although others might disagree.


FriedGreen,don't forget to photo document your progress,it might come in handy as a tech tip for others.

I am installing remote locks on the trucks when I add the alarm system. I probably wont be shaving the handles, however you never know.

Did you find more than the one photo (the same one coilover shows at his photobucket link)?

I scrolled down on my last link and it shows six pictures total.Look at coilovers replys.

I thought the question was where can you find the parts. Go to any of the three links (they are not all different companies, just different web sites) and start looking for what you need. After navigating through one of the links I came up with this.

PS the search engines on any given site may or may not work, for instance try searching for something on JC's page. Sometimes you just have to go to the fridge and get your own glass of milk instead of having mom get it for you, IE navigate around and find what you want.

They are interested in coilovers pictures for the custom drivers side lock.They wasn't sure what web site he was posting on.

I like the idea of having a outside door lock on the drivers door.I would like to see more photos of this modification.

Well, you dont always have someone to open your door! Remote locks would be good as well and an alarm system would be handy.

I want to install a drivers lock for convience, this is going on my 51 GMC suburban, this suburban will be USED on a daily basis and I dont want to me running though the passenger side to drive somewhere. On my 54 chevy truck I have locks on both sides, but thats a different handle.

I've been thinking about this for sometime as well and decided to use remote door locks and poppers.
