I searched the past posts and didn't find what I was looking for. So I'll ask.

Has anyone put a 292 into a Task Force (55-59) truck? How difficult are the motor mounts and attaching to the SM420? Will it even fit inside the engine compartment without removing the radiator? What other issues? Are there any years of this engine that are better than others?

I've got the stock 235 in mine currently. I know the 261 is an easy drop in.

you're right about available notes on this swap
but it can be done. it will fit. you will have a LOT of work to do to fit this in. new mounts and probably a pusher fan using TWO 40 amp relays!!!
but you are a long way away to think ablout that right now. read leo's book on engines. all are about the same, some were made in mexico and are still quite good.

My '59 Viking has a 292. That's the way I bought it.
It has been awhile since I looked up the numbers, but if I remember correctly, it is a mid 60's (possibly 66) vintage. Let me know what you want to see, and I will snap some pics.
Keep in mind that it is just a work truck, not a fancy show rig.

I could use a couple of pics of your set up,I'm planning to install a 292 in my '57 GMC 100 as soon as I can find a good one I can afford.
In particular,I'm interested in the motor mounts,and how the frame mounts are fitted to the frame.Also,I'm curious about firewall clearance compared to radiator clearance.

(inliner) buffalo steve for motor mounts for the 292, but other universal ones can work also. Buffalo makes things to FIT. Contact Buffalo Steve, Inliner advertiser, You can call Steve at Buffalo Enterprises - phone number: (360).652.7684 (do a search) and he can make you a mounting kit. You'll have to weld it in. I just installed a 292 in my 51 - 3100. I'm going to use a spal pusher fan w/ two relays. I have a three grove crank pulley and standard H2O pump w/ the pulley. There is room w/ the H2O pulley mounted w/o moving the radiator forward, (on mine anyway).

So from what I'm hearing, it can be done.

Seems GM changed the bellhousing crossmemeber at some point in time (54 or 55?) to one that will connect to newer V8 bellhousing. As I have a 58 my crossmember is good to accept the new bellhousing.

The 292 won't bolt up to the old bellhousing that the 235 uses, but will bolt up to the newer V8 bellhousing. Did all the V8 bell housings (of the time when they made the 292) bolt up directly to the SM 420? Does the SM 465 have the same bolt pattern as the SM 420?

The motor mounts to the frame will have to be fabbed or at least modified from off the shelf ones to fit my 1 ton frame... that shouldn't be too tough.

I've heard you can fit the mechanical fan in, but may require some modifying of the fan shroud and fan spacers.

Still not sure with clutch linkage, but I am optimistic. Not sure with starter. May have to do away with my foot stomp starter.

Now to find a junk yard jewel 292 with bell housing. The search is on!

correct, the 216 and 235 bellhousing will NOT fit a 292.
there are two different bellhousing openings...
the sm420 diameter centering collar is smaller than say an sm465 or T5 centering collar. so you will have to locate the approprate size for your needs. and yes the more modern bellhousings will fit any L6 and any V8 bolt pattern. therefore any modern automatic tranny will fit any L6 or V8. the bolt pattern of all the modern trannys is the same to the bellhousing.
if you run a T5 w/ a 292 you do not need to cut the centering collar tube as you would on a 235 application.
sorry the foot start has to go but i left the foot bolted in situ just cause.

rather than answer all your questions

when you get to the point you need to fit items in the engine compartment you'll know to ask
